A common misconception about Montessori is Structure and that it does not encourage imaginary play. Instead of being against fantasy and creativity, Dr. Maria Montessori found that children prefer activities providing practical experiences that fulfill their inner needs. The ” freedom with guidance” approach to learning promotes creativity in problem-solving which encourages the child to explore the fantasy play initiated by the child. Research considers this approach is healthy and purposeful.
At Remuera Montessori, we constantly observe, take down anecdotes and discuss children’s voice at our staff meetings. We create resources, and integrate all aspects of learning and consider art, music and movement to be an integral part in promoting child’s imagination.
Here is a snap shot of our week where children explore our solar system, healthy recipes with seasonal crops, building a giant robot and many more!
Hope you are keeping warm this weekend.
